Welcome to the Fraudian Slip, the Identity Theft Resource Center’s (ITRC) podcast, where we talk about all things identity compromise, crime and fraud that impact people and businesses. Listen on Apple, Google, Spotify, SoundCloud, Audible and Amazon now. Normally, each month, we have a conversation with an expert in the field of identity and data protection, cybersecurity or privacy. This month, we feature a presentation from an identity fraud summit hosted by the ITRC and supported by Socure, highlighting research on how consumers view ID verification.

Identity fraud has become a national security threat, resulting in $50+ billion in losses, with 400+ million victims suffering the fallout every year. As consumers continue to bring the most essential elements of their lives online, from banking to health care to public services, we must treat digital identity as critical national infrastructure. It is time to unmask the complexities of identity and work together to develop trusted identity processes that change the national narrative and put an end to attacks on U.S. consumers and businesses.

The 2024 Identivation Summit included:

  • Identity Deep Dives: In the era of GenerativeAI, identity threats only become more complex.
  • Change Makers: Presentations on the state of digital identity and the future of shared solutions.
  • The Scope, Scale and Impacts of Identity Crimes: ITRC experts and identity theft victims share the latest in identity crime trends and how victims are impacted by identity misuse.
  • Collaborative insights: The exploration of new technologies and strategies to combat identity crimes and safeguard identities against evolving threats.

In Part 2 of our Fraudian Slip podcast series that looks back at the Summit, we share a presentation from ITRC Chief Operating Officer James E. Lee on research conducted by the Center that delves into consumer experiences with application and ID verification processes. The research will shed light on the challenges consumers face when proving their identity. Listen to the whole podcast using the audio player above.
