Welcome to The Fraudian Slip, the Identity Theft Resource Center’s (ITRC) podcast, where we talk about all-things identity compromise, crime and fraud that impact people and businesses. Listen on Apple, Google, Spotify, SoundCloud, Audible, and Amazon now. Thanks for joining us for the first episode of our third season, where we will talk about Identity Theft Awareness Week 2022.

We are still trying to determine the full impact of 2021 on identity and privacy. However, January has already been an eventful month. We started the New Year’s Weekend with a Florida health system announcing that sensitive personal and health information of 1.3 million patients had been compromised in a cyberattack

The following week the New York Attorney General revealed an investigation that found 1.1 million online accounts at 17 well-known organizations were compromised using stolen logins and passwords. Most of the attacks had not been detected by the companies.

Next month, the first week of February, will be Identity Theft Awareness Week 2022. There is a lot to be aware of – as the first month of the year proves.

Joining us today to talk about what we all need to do as part of Identity Theft Awareness Week 2022 is Kelle Slaughter from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the agency of the federal government with responsibility for helping consumers protect their privacy and identities. Also joining is the ITRC’s own CEO Eva Velasquez.

We talked with Kelle Slaughter about the following:

  • Identity Theft Awareness Week 2022 and the FTC.
  • Six (6) years since www.IdentityTheft.gov; what has changed?
  • Some of the different myths and misconceptions.
  • How the FTC helps consumers.

We talked with Eva Velasquez about the following:

  • Identity Theft Awareness Week 2022 and the ITRC.
  • Some of the different myths and misconceptions.
  • How the ITRC helps consumers.

You can learn more about protecting your identity, privacy or security, or get help if you have been the victim of an identity crime by visiting the FTC’s website www.IdentityTheft.gov.
