Welcome to theFraudian Slip, the Identity Theft Resource Center’s (ITRC) podcast, where we talk about all things identity compromise, crime and fraud that impact people and businesses. Listen on Apple, Google, Spotify, SoundCloud, Audible and Amazon now. Today, we look at benefits fraud.

The massive fraud that has been documented in government benefit programs, much of it tied to compromised identity, has gotten material attention from both Democrats and Republicans. The previous Administration spent three years trying to craft an Executive Order focused on identity theft tied to government benefits, and the Trump Administration’s DOGE Commission has also started to highlight this issue.

However, is identity fraud just a benefits issue? Can an effort focused just on reducing identity fraud in government benefits succeed if it doesn’t look more holistically at the root causes of identity theft and fraud in every sector?

In this panel, Eva Velasquez of the ITRC, Kate Griffin of the Aspen Institute, Matthew Noyes of the U.S. Secret Service, Shoshana Weissman of R Street Institute and John W. Carlson of the American Bankers Association discuss these questions about benefits fraud and more with moderator Jeremy Grant of Venable LLP. To watch the full panel, click here
